Disney: Day 5, Part 3

Friday, January 16th
Day 5, Part 3 – Extra Magic Hours at Epcot

Here’s What Happened:
We finished eating about 6:00, and thought we would go take one last look at the animals. My aunt, uncle and cousin had stayed at the resort before and Danielle thought you could get to the big savanna by going out the doors to the pool right by the check in desk for Boma. So we headed outside, and noticed how much colder it was now that the sun had set. Some people were in the pool, and that just made all of us cold.

We walked around for awhile before a helpful CM pointed us in the direction of one of the viewing areas. We couldn’t see anything though. I asked about the night vision goggles and they said that didn’t start until 8:30. I thought that was a little silly since it was dark now, but whatever. We were all getting chilled with our long walk, and it turns out you can’t get to the big savanna from there. By this point we were ready to head back inside. But first, Bethany spotted the playground, so we had to wait while she played there. She had to go down every slide before we could leave.

We went inside and looked around the gift shop for a little bit. I love all the unique things they have in here. We got Bethany a little toy that’s like a drum, but you spin it to get the wooden pieces to hit the drum and make noise. She likes it, but can’t quite get the spinning action down yet.

I had mentioned to my sister that Shane and I would like the chance to go to the parks one night without Bethany and she said she was willing to take her back tonight. Epcot had extra magic hours, so we were going to head there. Dad and Logan were up for it to.

Danielle took Grandma, Grandpa, Amanda, and Bethany back to the resort. Here’s a picture Amanda took when they got there.
Amanda gave her a bath and got her to bed. However she did send me a text saying that she had to put Bethany in timeout because she bit Amanda. Whoops.

Dad, Logan, Shane, and I went down to the bus stops and saw that an Epcot bus was waiting at the stop, so we ran down to catch it. When we got to the park, Dad went to World Showcase, and we didn’t see him again until the next morning. I don’t think he stayed long.

Logan, Shane, and I rode the new Spaceship Earth first. I had seen the pictures online from people who took pictures of the video at the end and I was excited about seeing this. I didn’t realize that they took your picture at the beginning of the ride. Logan was turned around talking to us, and just barely got turned around in time. Her expression was great.

I liked the ride, but couldn’t exactly remember what was new. Shane said it was a big improvement, so he remembered better than I did. The best part was our future.

I love how Shane’s wearing the more feminine clothes and I have on more masculine ones. Plus notice how Shane is sitting with his legs crossed. It was just too good.

When we got off, we found all of us on the big globe. The games looked pretty cool, but we didn’t want to spend too much time here because we wanted to do some other things, so we headed out into the cold.

Next we went to Test Track. I think the posted wait time was around 30 minutes. I think I had Shane time it, and it didn’t take that long, but it was the longest wait of our trip. Maybe around 20 minutes. Since this was Logan’s first time, I requested that we ride in the front of the car. I wanted to make sure we had an unobstructed view in our ride picture. Because I requested the front, Logan was convinced this was going to be a really scary ride. She screamed the entire time. It’s not really a ride that you need to scream at much. Shane and I were laughing at all her screaming. It was really funny.

It was fun to ride. We hadn’t been on it since 2004 because it was closed on our last trip. I had almost forgotten that it broke down when we rode it in 2004 and we had to climb out of our cars and walk out through the backstage area. That was pretty cool.

So from TT we went to Mission Space. This ride makes me sick. I never get motion sickness on anything, but the last time I was on it, I was really nauseous afterwards. I was really excited to hear that they came out with the two different versions because I thought I’d never ride it again. Logan didn’t mind that we were going to ride the tamer version. I think Shane and I convinced her enough with our horror story from last time.

When we got up to the building there seemed to be a long line even though the tip board said it was a five minute wait. But once we got up there we realized there were just people bunched up because you had to show your resort key since we were now in EMH. We told the CM we wanted the green version, and we walked right into the final room before loading. We waited a few minutes and then got into our vehicle. Since there were only three of us, Shane was going to try to push the buttons for the empty seat. Last time someone (I’m not mentioning any names) forgot to push their button and we almost skidded off a cliff. Okay, I admit it. It was me. So I was paying close attention this time. And I got both of my buttons pushed. This ride was really fun, and I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything except the nausea. I’ll definitely do this again, but only on the green side.

When we were exiting the ride through the store a CM had an air gun that she was shooting at people. Logan and Shane got hit. And Shane got really excited because someone at his office had one, and he thought they were cool. We went and checked them out, and they were only $10. So both Logan and Shane had to get one. We used our rewards card and the total purchase was 10.65. By now our card total was down to 116.99 not too bad considering we only had two days left.

The gun is pretty cool. It shoots a puff of air at you and you really feel like you’ve gotten hit with something. Bethany thought it was great when Daddy shot her in the face. I haven’t seen it for awhile. I wonder where Shane’s hiding it.

One of the CM’s also had on a Statler pin from the Muppets. Waldorf and Statler are Shane’s favorite Muppets, so I was excited to see it. It was part of a Muppets hidden Mickey set, but I didn’t figure we get any of them since I hadn’t seen any yet on the five days of our vacation. We traded and got Shane one of his only pins.

Then we went out the play area and Shane and I made some video postcards. We sent one to our friends that we traveled with last time. She really enjoyed it and said it made her laugh. Then Shane made one to send to work. Only after he sent it he realized that it was Friday night and they wouldn’t get it until Monday. Oh well. Don’t you love how you lose track of the days of the week when you’re at WDW?

Next we walked over the Imagination pavilion. I thought this would be a good time to ride Journey Into the Imagination. This isn’t a must-do on my list. But I wanted Logan to experience as much as she could since this was her first trip. Plus, there’s not a ton open during EMH. When we got up to boarding area, the ride wasn’t even going. So they started it just for us and we took off. It was a cute enough ride, but I have to tell you that it was kind of freaky riding it by ourselves. During the dark parts, I’ll admit to being a little scared. Who would have thought I could have been scared by Figment.

We played for a little bit when we came off the ride, but it seemed like a lot of things were broken. But we did find the Waldorf pin to go with Shane’s Statler pin.
That was a really exciting find of the night.

In keeping with the theme of doing things for Logan to experience we went to Honey I Shrunk the Audience. I really don’t like this show, but I sucked it up and did it for Logan. I feel like you have to wait forever just to get into a mediocre show. The theater is so run down too. It’s really time for them to come up with another movie for here. The next day when Logan was telling everybody what we had done she said the only thing she didn’t like was this movie. Well had I known that none of us would have suffered through it. Oh well. At least now she can say, “I didn’t like that one 3D movie” instead of, “I wish we would have had time to do that one 3D movie.”

We decided to end the night with Soarin. We were all pretty tired. When we walked into the pavilion a CM had the Marie and Cheshire Cat pins from the Hidden Mickey cats set that I was trying to collect for Bethany.
I was really happy to find those two and now I wasn’t just going to be stuck with the Siamese cat.

When we got down to Soarin there was a 45 minute wait and we all agreed we were too tired to wait that long. But I’m glad we came in because I found those two pins.

When we got out of the park we saw our bus at the stop and took off into an all out sprint. That was hardest I ran for a bus the entire week. We were the last people on, so I’m really glad we did. I don’t like running for buses, though, because it makes me realize just how out of shape I am.

We got back to resort at 10:30, and I don’t think it took us long to fall into bed.

Disney: Day 5, Part 2

Friday, January 16th
Day 5, Part 2 - Our visit to the Cast Members’ Store

Today’s Plans:

Here’s What Happened:
After meeting Mickey and Minnie, Bethany needed her diaper changed so we went back down to Pete’s Garage. The crowds were really thick at this point. On the way back out from the bathroom, Bethany got mad at me and hit me in the face. So when we got back to the stroller, I put her in time out. Right about this time, my aunt and cousin showed up. So Bethany made a great first impression. My aunt lives in Key West, but she used to live in the Chicago suburbs. It was nice that she traveled up to see us.

I really wanted to tour Minnie’s house before we left Toontown, so a few of us headed in that direction. I didn’t figure it would take that long because there’s never a line for Minnie’s house. Well we walked in the door and what do we encounter, but, a line. But we still took some time to explore and make ourselves comfortable.

Logan and Bethany were working on some pottery.

I loved Minnie’s To-Do List.

Bethany really enjoyed the kitchen.
But it was pretty packed in there. I wish we would have had some more time to explore.

Bethany was also very interested in what Minnie was reading.

When we came out my cousin, Danielle and Aunt Teresa were waiting for us. They thought we got lost. We just told them that it was a long line. After that I was ready to get out of Toontown.

Next thing on the agenda was the Tea Cups. I had forgotten about them earlier in the week, so I had to make sure we got them in. The line wasn’t that long, but my grandpa’s knee was bothering him, so he didn’t wait with us. We probably ended up waiting around 10 minutes.

So it was just Shane, Bethany, and I in our tea cup. Bethany was having a great time.

Then she noticed that Daddy was turning the cup with the wheel in the middle, so she had to help.

But then she held on a little too long, and got drug around the seat. So then she had to hold onto Daddy’s hand for safety for the rest of the ride.
She really loved it and asked to ride, “Again. More,” when the ride stopped. I know we’ll be riding this many times in future years.

Everyone came off still feeling good, so we headed for lunch. It was getting close to noon, and we had an early supper tonight. So I thought Pinocchio’s might be a good choice. I lost my receipt, so I don’t know what everyone had. I do know that I got the Figaro Fries. I had these on our last trip in 2006 and loved them. I even craved them when I was pregnant with Bethany. And Shane wouldn’t make a trip down there to get me some, imagine that! I knew that they changed them, so I was prepared. They were still good, and I added some ranch dressing from the fixings bar, so that helped. I hope they never take them off the menu for good.

It was time to get Bethany back for her nap since we would be leaving a little earlier to get the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our dinner at Boma. Shane, Bethany, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa all headed back the resort. The rest of us went with Danielle and Aunt Teresa.

There’s a store called Cast Connections that the cast members can shop at and bring guests to. It has discontinued merchandise from the parks. We’d been there in 2004, and you can get some pretty good deals. I knew I wanted to go on this trip, but didn’t know when we would fit it into our schedule. It just so happened to work out today.

First I wanted to go to the store by the Pooh ride and get a gift for one of Bethany’s friends who loves Pooh. I found a cute little growth charts and some stickers for her.

Logan had been wanting to get an ear hat, so we thought now would be a good time to look. While we were crossing the bridge back the central hub, we saw a PP photographer. And I like to stop every time we see one, so we did.
They were taking the picture at an odd angle to try to cut out the crane.

I made Logan take a picture by herself as well, and she got to do the Tinkerbell shot.
I think she’ll be glad I made her do it.

We continued on our quest for the ear hat, and made our way down Main Street. We had to go into the Confectionary. I knew I wanted to get some taffy on this trip, so I figured now was a good time. I also picked up some yummy coconut patties, and a Mickey head rice krispie treat. Logan also took this time get a hat from the Chapeau. For the life of me, I can’t remember what she got. I’ll have to ask.

Now we were on our way out of the park. Danielle was parked at the Ticket and Transportation Center, so we were going to take the monorail. All week the newbies had been talking about riding the monorail. My sister was giving them a hard time, because she didn’t see what was so special about it. She said it was just a train. I disagree, though. The monorail is very special. So Logan was excited. I don’t know why, but I always feel like a ride on the monorail is so relaxing.

We found Danielle’s car and she drove us over to Cast Connections. If you’ve ever seen any of the backstage area, you know it definitely lacks the magic. From the outside, it’s just a boring old warehouse. The inside is clean, but there’s no frills. We looked around for quite a while. They have pretty much what’s in the stores except a more limited selection. Towards the back of the warehouse is furniture that is dinged up or dingy. It’s weird to see end tables and headboards from the resorts. My cousin did say that she got a nice office chair from here. Since there’s no way I had room for table and chairs set in my suitcase, I didn’t look there for too long. I did settle on two t-shirts for Bethany. One was a Belle shirt that was originally $27.00 and I got it for $10. Then I found a 1st visit t-shirt that was similar to the one I had seen earlier that day. I was probably just an older style. It was only $7, and the one I had seen in the store was somewhere around $15. I also got a $3 lanyard to put all the pins on that we had been trading. I think it was a very worthwhile trip for me.

Danielle drove us back to our resort and we got back around 2:00. I loved it when she dropped us off because it seemed like we saved so much time. When we got back to the room today, housekeeping had already come, so that was really nice.

O riginally, the plans were to spend some time in the afternoon at the AK and then head over to the resort for dinner at Boma. With the way the nap schedule had been going, I knew that the plan probably wouldn’t work that way. So I just decided we would go straight to the Animal Kingdom Lodge resort. And I knew a taxi would be the best way to get there.

We left our rooms at 3:45 and went down to bell services to call a cab. We had eight people, but because Bethany could ride on a lap we fit in a van for seven people. I was glad it worked out that way. We got to the AKL at 4:10 and it was $20 for the taxi. It was completely worth it in my opinion. I can’t imagine the hassle of changing buses, and it was nice not to have to leave extra early.

We took in the resort a little bit, and then went out back to look at the animals.
The cow with his head tipped had an ear infection in one ear. My grandpa suspected that before the guide told us.

After we watched for a bit, the giraffes started coming out.
That was really exciting since we hadn’t seen any on the safari earlier in the week.

And then some zebras came out.
We hadn’t gotten to see those either on the safari.

Danielle and Aunt Teresa got there and came back and found us. It was just about 4:30, but I wasn’t worried about checking in right on time. The restaurant didn’t open until 4:30 anyway.

We went in and may have checked in a few minutes late, but that wasn’t a big deal since none of us were starving. Originally I had made the reservation for 9 because my aunt hadn’t planned on coming then. So when I checked in I told them we had 10 now and that wasn’t a problem. I didn’t think it would be too hard to go from 9 to 10.

We were seated at a really cool shaped table. It was kind of like a kidney bean shape, but not quite. It seemed like it was easier to talk to everyone that way. Our server gave us the rundown and took drink orders. And then we each made a way up to the buffet.

I went and grabbed some food for Bethany and then waited with her while Shane went to get food for himself. By this time other people returned so I went up to start with the soups. I had the squash soup and the corn and chicken soup. Both were delicious. The squash soup tasted just like pumpkin pie and the corn and chicken soup was to die for. I think those were the two best things I had. I would go back there again just for that.

I went back and tried a little bit of everything else. I don’t remember too many things specifically, but I really liked most of it. They had some really good miniature corn muffins that I especially liked.

Meanwhile, Bethany was loving the strawberries. She would eat all of them on her plate, and then want more. So every time someone went back we asked them to get Bethany strawberries. I think she ate at least 10 of them that night, and they’re pretty big. She probably had more than that. We’ve been buying more strawberries for her since then.

And I couldn’t miss out on dessert. I had to sample a little bit of everything there. The zebra domes are okay, but I’m not as crazy about them as other people are. I think I can taste the liqueur in them. Plus I’m not a big fan of coffee. The dessert I remember loving was the banana bread pudding. There were two sauces to try a caramel and vanilla. The vanilla was the best. If I would have had any room left I would have gotten more of that.

Everyone loved the food, and we had a really nice dinner. We got to use Danielle’s cast discount, so that was nice too. My dad said that he didn’t know how I would top yesterday’s meal at Le Cellier, but I just did with this one. He graciously picked up the tab for us. Here we are all satisfied by our delicious meal.

This is one of those places that I feel like I have to eat at every trip. It’s just so good. And it’s different from what we normally eat, but still familiar enough not to be weird. It might be fun to try breakfast here, but dinner is so good. Breakfast is cheaper, though, so maybe we’ll have to give it a try.

Disney: Day 5, Part 1

Day 5, Part 1 - I get in trouble with a cast member!

Here’s What Happened:
I got up once again at 6:00 and my sister followed as we went about our morning routine. Bethany actually slept in this morning until 7:15. Our group ate in our room this morning, but I think everybody else went to the food court. I think they were getting tired of cold cereal. I can’t really blame them because they usually eat a more substantial breakfast. However, for my family, a trip to the food court for breakfast is a waste of money. All Shane ever eats is cereal. Bethany usually has cereal too. And I’m fine with whatever.

When we left the room the temperature was 46°, which is warmer than it had been in previous mornings. However, the high today was only supposed to be 58. We knew we wouldn’t be shedding too many layers today.

We got the bus stop at a great time, and got a bus to the Magic Kingdom at 8:00. I think we would make it in time for the opening today. It took about twenty minutes to get there, and then we waited to go through the turnstiles. I took a picture of my grandparents while we were waiting to get in.

We were let through the turnstiles and had to wait some more. It wouldn’t have been so bad, but it was pretty chilly. Finally the opening show started, and I was there in plenty of time to see it.

The family to open the park was a young married couple. My sister was a little indignant that they didn’t even have kids. But I was glad they don’t always pick people with kids. Everyone needs to experience the magic.

After the show was over, we high-tailed it into the park and towards Tomorrowland. The first thing we had to do was Buzz Lightyear. This was Shane’s favorite ride from our trip in 2004. However, in 2006 it was closed for refurbishment the whole time. He was really mad about that, but what can you do. (I tried to convince him we needed to go again, but the soonest I could get him back there was 3 years later.) We wound our way through all the dividers and basically walked right on to the ride. I can’t remember who rode with Bethany, but it wasn’t Shane and I. I think she rode with my dad, but I’m not sure. Because we walked right on, I didn’t really have time to explain to everyone how to play. I think they figured it out.

It was fun, but I did not do well.
I think I did better in previous years. Of course, my gun was faulty. At least that’s what I’m going to say.

From there we went over to Space Mountain. I knew Grandma and Grandpa wouldn’t want to ride because it’s so jerky. Shane surprised me and said he didn’t want to go either. So I told him to take Grandma, Grandpa, and Bethany on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. I thought that would be something relaxing for them to do instead of just stand around and wait for us.

So Dad, Logan, Amanda, and I walked into Space Mountain. There really wasn’t much of a line and before long we were being assigned to our spots. I can’t remember if we asked about to be or not, but Logan was in the very front. I really liked to stick her in the front for her first time experiencing these rides.

I forget just how rough this ride is. It really jiggles the snot out of you. I’m glad they’re going to refurb it. It really needs it. Logan screamed bloody murder the whole time. That always makes a ride more enjoyable. When we got done she said, “That was so scary. I couldn’t see where we going the whole time.” Well that’s kind of the point.

We came off of that ride and met back up with the rest of the group.

I thought we were doing really great on time, and I had managed to convince Logan that we didn’t need to do the Tomorrowland Speedway. That ride was always so cool before you could drive. Now, as an adult, I think, “Is this all the faster these things can go?” I’m sure we’ll have to ride them next time with Bethany. But luckily when Logan saw that the cars were being held on the track by the metal rail, that made it less fun for her.

So I thought we would make it to Toontown a little before it opened. But then my sister said, “What about that Monsters, Inc show?” Oh right, the Laugh Floor. I had completely forgotten about that since it was new for us. I knew this was one we had to do, so we walked over that way. We made it in to the very first room, and, I’m not kidding you, the doors to second holding room, shut in my face. Darn! We were about 10 seconds too slow that day. So Bethany amused herself with the bubbles.

I told Shane, Logan, and Amanda about how you could text in a joke, and we all started thinking. We were still trying to think of one when the opened the doors and let us into the second room. I couldn’t believe that between the four of us nobody could think of anything. Shane loves Laffy Taffy, and you’d think that of all of them he’s eaten you’d remember some joke. I think we had finally given up, but then one came to me. Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9. Okay, I know it’s not the most original, but it was a joke nonetheless, so Logan texted it in for us.

Soon after that we were let into the theater. I love the way it was decorated like a comedy club with the Monsters, Inc touches thrown in. We were enjoying the show when Bethany and Dad were picked as a two-headed human.
It was during the part with the two-headed monster, Sam & Ella. They asked Dad their names and where they were from. Dad told them, and Sam was sure he knew a lot about Illinois. He sang a cute little jingle with some incorrect facts about Illinois. The only one I can remember is the last thing which is it has the Eiffel Tower. He asked Dad if that was right and Dad said no. Then Sam said, “Well, Terry, if that is your real name. When was the last time you were there?” Dad answered, “Three days ago.” That really took the wind out of Sam’s sails. It was so cute.

While all this is going on, I’m trying to take a picture of them on the big screen. We wanted to remember their moment of fame. After I had taken several pictures to get a good one, a CM comes over to me in a very stern voice and says, “No pictures!” Whoops! I had missed that little announcement. I had gotten a good picture, so I put my camera away.

The funny thing is later when we talked about this attraction everyone in my family was like, “Oh that’s where you got in trouble.” I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but everyone sure remembered it. And you know what, I’d do it again to get a picture of someone in my family if they were part of the show. Shhh. Don’t tell.

Logan’s joke also made it into the show, so I was glad we managed to come up with one. The theater wasn’t full so I figured we had a pretty good chance.

So after my run in with the law, we walked over to Toontown. I really wanted to get her early and get autographs before the crowds built. Since this was Friday of the holiday weekend, I was expecting the crowds to pick up some. We went over to the Hall of Fame and got in line for the Princesses. It was only a 15 minute wait. I think the Fairies were already at 30 minutes. It was only shortly after 10:00.

I don’t think we waited the whole fifteen minutes though. We were towards the end of the group that they let into the room. I immediately spotted the Snow White eyes pin I wanted on one the of the CM’s lanyards. I asked to trade with him, and after he had everyone situation in the room, I got my pin.
Now I only had Belle left to find.

Pretty soon it was Bethany’s turn to meet Aurora. She hadn’t seen Sleeping Beauty, but she wanted to meet her just the same.

She got her autograph, and then posed with Logan for a picture.
She was definitely getting the smiling part down. Since we’ve been back, she now knows who Aurora is even though we still haven’t seen the movie.

Next up was Cinderella. Bethany had seen this movie, but only once or twice. Cinderella asked who Bethany was traveling with.

Bethany was too shy to answer, but she did sit in her lap for a picture.

Then Cinderella gave Bethany a kiss.


I had told some of my family that Cinderella is harder to meet since she has the character meals, and I didn’t know if we’d get to see her. So we were all thrilled when she was one of the princesses. This was my first time meeting her, so I wanted a picture as well.
She’s my 2nd favorite princess.

Then Logan had her turn as well.

My grandma had told us that Cinderella was her favorite character, so we made her take a picture with her by herself.My grandma said that was one of the highlight of her trip, getting to meet Cinderella.

The last princess was Belle. This is probably Bethany’s favorite and mine too. We were excited that she was wearing her beautiful ball gown. She talked with Bethany for awhile and I told her about Bethany’s Belle and Beast dolls. If they aren’t together she will always go find the other one, so they can be back together. They took the posed picture.

And then I wanted to get one with us older girls.

After we finished with the princesses, some of the group had to make a bathroom break. I wondered around the Hall of Fame tent looking at the merchandise. There were a few kids that I wanted to bring something back for and hadn’t found anything yet. I saw a cute 1st visit T-shirt that I thought about getting for Bethany but I didn’t. Everyone regrouped and next up on the agenda was touring Mickey’s house.

As we walked over there, I could tell that the crowds were really picking up. We took our tour through Mickey’s house.
And then got in line to meet Mickey and Minnie. Dad and Grandpa went to find a bench. I think this was the longest wait we had the whole trip, and it was about 15 minutes. Well, there might have been one longer, but Bethany wasn’t with us.

We met Mickey and Minnie. I can’t remember what we talked about, but Bethany enjoyed meeting them again.
Logan had a turn by herself. Her favorite character is Minnie.

And my sister had mentioned that she wanted to get a picture alone with them. She shares a birthday with Mickey so she told him that when she went up to meet them. Minnie was like, “Me too!” And I knew that, but I guess I had forgotten to tell Amanda that Minnie’s birthday is the same day.
Since we weren’t really celebrating any birthdays on this trip, this was my only chance to use this border. In case you’re wondering their birthday is November 18th. Some year I want to bring my DS back on her birthday. I think it would be fun to see what Mickey and Minnie do.
